The fall/winter hunting season is closely approaching. We need to be mindful of hunters looking for food for their table and enjoying their sport.
Reminder to Equestrians and Hikers: The first of Iowa’s shotgun deer seasons is December 7-11 followed by the second from December 14-22. Most people do not consider this a safe time to be hiking or riding since Shimek Forest is open to hunting. Outdoorever.com notes that straight walled 40 caliber rifle bullets which can be used during this "shotgun" season in Iowa: " In optimal conditions and when fired from 5 feet above the ground, the bullet can reach up to 6,600 feet." That is over a mile.
Stay Safe this Hunting Season

The purpose of the Friends of Shimek is to support the DNR staff in developing and maintaining the Shimek campgrounds and equestrian trails consistent with good forestry practices and the protection of our state's natural resources. The Lick Creek Unit has two public equestrian campgrounds with over 25 miles of trails for equestrians, bicyclists and hikers in Shimek's Lick Creek Unit. The two primitive campgrounds are White Oak and Bitternut Campgrounds.
